Welcome to the Ephemeral Film Wiki

We hope this will be a resource for research about the ephemeral film genre - a wide definition of films that were made for a specific time, place and/or audience. This genre includes educational, industrial, sponsored, non-theatrical shorts, lab research, etc. It doesn't include feature films or television programs - although snipes, promotional shorts, TV advertising, etc. could be welcome.

Currently, we will be listing the titles held by the A/V Geeks 16mm Archive ( www.avgeeks.com ) but hope to expand holdings by other archives and collectors and list films that nobody has.

We welcome your input!

Princess Nicotine; or, The Smoke Fairy

Princess Nicotine; or, The Smoke Fairy is a 1909 five-minute silent film directed by J. Stuart Blackton.

In the film, a smoker (Paul Panzer) falls asleep and is visited by two fairies (one of which is played by Gladys Hulette). Audiences marveled at the special effects featuring the fairies interacting with objects much larger than themselves. Princess Nicotine was the first instance of tobacco product placement (for Sweet Corporal cigarettes and cigars) in the movies.

In 2003, it was among the 25 films added to the Library of Congress Library of Congress National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant."
