Dial D for Design is a short film from 1960s released on 16mm. It is held in the Prelinger Archives collection.

"The purpose of this film is to illustrate a method to design, develop and test integrated displays and controls for Weapon Systems in accordance with MIL-P-25996. Obviously specific procedures vary according to contractors and projects...."

many shots, incl. engineers working with machinery, aerospace animation, instrumentation, some test flight footage

12:01:59:26 Great special effects shot of futurists spaceship flying in outer space with rotating earth in background. Aerial shot of four different army planes peeling out of frame one by one.

12:02:29:25 CU instrument panel in cockpit of plane.

12:03:08:13 CU VS instrument panel for airplane dissolves into different instrument panel designs.

12:04:17:01 CU spinning globe.

12:04:25:29 Rotating model of YF-107A fighter-bomber plane dissolves into LS actual plane on runway.

12:05:06:17 CU Operational Analysis sign, camera pans out, man approaches old guard at desk who hands him a note on yellow paper.

12:05:30:22 Great tracking shot man in black suit walks down aisles of office packed with men in white shirts diligently working at their desks, man enters office with decal on glass window Head Operational Analysis Group.

12:06:22:01 CU disembodied hand holding pen writes Output in cursive on white notepad under title on top of note types of subsystems , camera zooms in CU on word output.

12:08:10:15 Two engineers wearing white shirts work on large machine with various knobs and switches demonstrating for two men in suits looking on. CU machine with stationary ink point charting curved line on graph paper scrolling through machine.

12:09:31:12 VS CU man follows path of wire showing plane s trajectory over large topological model on table of mountain elevations.

12:12:49:22 CU man opens folder labeled Whole Panel; CU first document in folder titled The Air Force Program for Improved Flight Instrumentation.

12:13:54:10 Two men in dark suit and white shirts look over engineers should as he points out different knobs on panel of large machine; the two men in suits walk over to chalkboard with two lists written on it in chalk, one list for Subsystem with item under it: navigation, communication, Doppler, fire control, bomber, datalink, ILAS; and another list for Computer Coupler with items listed mostly as Check and OK. Men point out items on board, one using erasing of pencil as pointer.

12:14:20:11 CU pencil checks of handwritten items on list: input signals, output signals, input impedances, output impedance, power requirements, voltage requirements, accuracy, scale factors.

12:15:52:16 VS engineers in laboratory work on airplane instrument, various electronic components and wires on work table, man observes engineers at work at takes notes.

12:16:14:07 Three men including one army general walk up to model display of airplane seat and instrument panel; VS men examining the instrument panel.

12:19:07:13 Disembodied hand turns various knobs on panel covered in rows of black knobs, camera pans down to man working at machine with hundreds of wires plugged into it; CU machine records positions of each control printing various parallel diagnostic lines on graph paper.

12:19:43:28 Clock on wall reads 11:30. Superimposed white wedge fills 7 minute segment of clock.

12:19:59:14 Pointer follows metal wire with miniature plane mounted on it, wire follows trajectory of plane over model of model of mountains range.

12:20:45:16 Pilot in orange suit and white helmet seated in plane parked in deserted runway, VS pilot prepares for take off; CU disembodied finger flips switch to lower canopy; canopy automatically lowers over pilot in cockpit; CU VS instruments on plane s instrument panel; plane begins to move on runway; CU pilot pushes forward accelerator with hand, plane taking off. VS CU aircraft instruments, VS aerials of flying plane.

12:27:57:28 Pilot flying F-107A fighter-bomber plane; VS landing gear lower, plane lands, parachute released from back of plane on runway to slow down aircraft.

12:29:14:03 VS F-107A fighter-bomber plane taking off; CU instrument on instrument panel.
