Abstract

Uses a modern version of the Thorndike problem box. Cats, placed in a box with a transparent wall, learn to press against an upright pole to open a door and obtain food. Each finally learns to push against the pole in its own stereotyped manner, having eliminated most needless movements in the course of learning. One cat shows all the repetitions in its complete history of learning.
