The steps to self-reliance takes time and hard work, and these steps: (1) Assume responsibility, (2) Be informed, (3) Know where you're going, and (4) Make your own decisions. Allen frequently checks a card with these steps typed on it to help himself develop self-reliance and his father presents him with Self Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Allen learned to develop the habit of self-reliance and became a happier person.
