Inside Story of Modern Gasoline, The
Inside Story of Modern Gasoline, The is a short film from ca. 1946 released on 16mm. It is held in the Prelinger Archives collection.
Describes (in partly animated form: "talking gasoline drops," etc!) the refining of gasoline, its chemical breakdown, etc; excellent shots of gasoline stations (with the "Royal Crown" glass globes atop the gas pumps; striking images), and oil refineries. Good shots fo stop light changing from red to green; driver's POV on Western highway; CU speedometer accelerating to 50 MPH; CU gas jet stovetop; beautiful Chrysler "Town and Country" ("Woody") on rural highway.

"The Inside Story of Modern Gasoline" presented by Standard Oil
Company (Indiana). A Leadership Through Science film.
Animation (funny shapes based on construction of molecules) used to
demonstrate how gas made, refined & improved. Experiments in
volatility, prevention of fuel knock, safe guards & exteriors of
refineries, interior labs. (Energy, petroleum, fossil fuels).
08:52:48:00 - 08:56:37:00 Color Sound c. 1946
Standard Red Crown, White Crown gas pumps in gas station. Cars on
highway, gas attendant fills tractor, fuel truck fills Delta
airplane. Animation (very cute) of carbon atom w/ 4 arms joining w/
hydrogen (1 arm) combining to form gasoline molecule. Look sort of
like little sperms. Examples of gas molecule, kerosene, fuel oil,
light lubricating, heavy lube & residual molecules. March in row.
Pool of crude oil (pollution, ecology), flow of gasoline. Storage
tanks, refinery, workers at refinery.
08:56:38:00 - 09:03:00:00 Color Sound c. 1946
Steaming tea kettle on stove, example of distillation. Hand holds
glass in front of steam. Towers at refinery. Breakdown of crude oil
by weight, 5 steps. Percentages of breakdown in barrel of crude
oil. Train moves along track near mountain. Derrick over oilwell.
More Crown gasoline globes on top of gas pump. Heat applied to
molecules. More INT refineries. Creation of anti knock gasoline.
VS EXT refinery.
09:03:01:00 - 09:05:45:00 Color Sound c. 1946
EXT large refinery. Small antique "first cracking unit" displayed
at refinery. More gasoline flowing. Car starting: foot on gas
pedal, engine turns over, man in driver's seat w/ hat smiling.
Idling engine. Stop light changes from red to green, cars go. POV
car of road. Good CU speedometer climbs toward 50. Good CU lighting
natural gas burner on stove w/ match. Scientist pouring liquid from
beaker into test tube. Liquid starts to boil as scientist holds in
hand. Pours liquid into dish & lights. Mixing different small
beakers of liquid into one large beaker. Volatile hydrocarbons.
09:05:46:00 - 09:12:19:00 Color Sound c. 1946
Molecules line up near a beaker & harmonize (wacky). INT of engine
laboratory. Experiments w/ volatility. Cars on city streets,
summer, winter. Map of the US. Nice Chrysler Town and Country
"Woody" convertible driving on rural road. Demonstration of engine
knock, mallet to piston. Funny, wacky animation of "untamed,
unruly" gas molecules vs. "tamed" & their performance. Model w/
dye & tetraethyl lead (leaded) gas. INT of lab testing for
knocking. More gas pouring.
09:12:20:00 - 09:15:21:00 Color Sound c. 1946
VS of men testing gas: Vapor pressure test, harmful gum test,
storability, purity. EXT of research facility. INT labs. Engine
cotesting. More EXTs laboratory, refinery, super fractionator,
refineries. More cute carbon atoms, harmonizing molecules. Tank
truck, brief gasoline station, more Crown globes on top of gasoline
pumps. Standard logo.| Inside Story of Modern Gasoline, The | |
