Traces the development of Robert, an aggressive, "difficult", yet appealing child, from his arrival in nursery school at two up through his first year in a public school at seven. Confused by adult pressures at home, his violent aggression in school is seen as a counterattack against the encroaching world. His mother's influence and his teacher's firm, affectionate treatment bring him through the stresses of his preschool years.
