A shot list is a document that maps out exactly what is needed to film. The shot list details what will occur and what will be used in that scene of the film. It is produced before filming occurs.

Shot-listing is the activity of compiling the actions and subjects for each discrete scene in a film. It is done before-hand by film authors, or, in the event the original shot-list is lost, an archivist may produce a shot-list to index the contents of a film.

A shot-list serves as a checklist for what is needed and prepares the crew for film expectations. It helps directors detail their thoughts and form a schedule for filming.
